3.6.4 Dissemination of existence of data - Registries / Catalogs

Catalog services allow the publication and retrieval of collections of descriptive information (metadata) about data and services. They are used not only to find existing data but to make known the existence of its own data. They also have the ability to harvest metadata in other catalogs. The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) makes a distinction between "catalog" and "register" by specifying that a register is a specialized catalog maintained by an official entity conforming to the procedures and policies for access and content management ISO 19135, ISO 11179-6).

For more information, see Section 6. Data Sharing.

Publishing the existence of data increases:

  • The visibility of the project;
  • The number of citations;
  • Reuse of data;
  • Opportunities for collaboration;
  • Contribution to other research;
  • The valuation of data.
