SGDO: Press release – adding 10 000 DFO datasets online
PRESS RELEASE – For immediate release
The St. Lawrence Global Observatory announces the addition of more than 10,000 Fisheries and Oceans Canada datasets on its portal
Rimouski, May 8th, 2024. The St. Lawrence Global Observatory (SLGO) is celebrating a major step forward in its commitment to the dissemination of scientific data by announcing the integration of more than 10,000 datasets from the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO), harvested in the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence. This close collaboration strengthens the position of SLGO as an essential platform to access diverse and high-quality research data, and contributes to increase the quantity of information available on the Canadian Integrated Ocean Observing System (CIOOS).
The datasets provided by DFO cover a wide range of oceanographic variables, both physical and chemical, which are essential to understanding the St. Lawrence. The integration of this data into SLGO’s portal opens new perspectives for researchers and scientists around the world, thus facilitating access to crucial information for their research. In addition, this available data will enable decision-making related to the development of policies and management of the St. Lawrence.
Anne-Sophie Ste-Marie, director of partnerships at SLGO, expressed her enthusiasm for this collaboration, affirming that “this initiative marks a significant step forward in our mission to promote data of our partners and ensuring their accessibility, but also their efficient reuse by the oceanographic community”.
“As an early partner of SLGO, Fisheries and Oceans Canada is always keen to make the numerous data collected by our scientific teams accessible,” mentions Jean-Yves Savaria, director of the Maurice-Lamontagne Institute. “SLGO is an ideal platform so that our data and those of our partners can be useful to more researchers here and around the world and to contribute to a better understanding of the changing environment that is the estuary and Gulf of the St. Lawrence”
SLGO’s portal, as a central point for the dissemination of oceanographic data, plays an essential role in creating a collaborative community focused on the exchange of knowledge, with a particular emphasis on the St. Lawrence, from the Great Lakes to the Gulf. The substantial addition of data from Fisheries and Oceans Canada reinforces the shared commitment to the accessibility of data needed to address today’s scientific and environmental challenges.
Users of the SLGO’s portal can now explore and download these datasets by visiting the Open Data Catalogue at the following link : https://catalogue.ogsl.ca/en/dataset/ca-cioos_d8371738-9960-4488-81f9-3ff678579c5f
