Protected Areas - Summary
As part of the St. Lawrence Action Plan (SLAP) 2011-2026, Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Canadian Wildlife Service (CWS-ECCC) and Quebec’s department of Développement durable, de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MDDELCC) have launched an initiative aiming at improving the existing inventory of complementary conservation measures on private land in Quebec. The main objective is to better visualize and understand the extent and scope of all private land conservation measures, which will help support the development of a future integrated plan for the conservation of the SLAP territory. Eventually, the plan will be used as a tool to identify priorities of funding programs such as the Community Interaction Program (CIP), the Habitat Stewardship Program (HSP) for species at risk, and the national fund for the wetlands conservation or to update regional municipalities’ land-use.
Results of such an inventory will help stakeholders better understand the various natural habitat conservation initiatives and become familiar with the organizations that are involved. Based on this information, new projects might be carried out to increase support of conservation and biodiversity preservation efforts.
