Essential Ocean Variables
To improve ocean observing efforts, ocean scientists have identified several key variables and have recommendations for best practices in data collection and management. These Essential Ocean Variables (EOVs) are identified based on their importance to research, feasibility to observe, and cost to collect.
SLGO supports all EOVs identified by the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) and is part of Canada’s commitment to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021 – 2030).
As part of the Ocean Decade, we strive to make information more accessible, predictable, and engaging for all. We also supports emerging EOVs, such as microbes and marine debris. Contact us if you wish to contribute data, but do not see it in the list of EOVs.
If you wish to contribute your data to SLGO, please read over our Data Management Resources and contact us when you’re ready to initiate the process.
Don’t forget to click on the variables below for their short definitions and links leading directly to datasets available on SLGO that contains the variable in question!
