- Myctophids: black body, rounded head, large eyes
- L. speculigera: robust body, dorsal and anal 'mirrors'
- All other Myctophidae are very difficult to identify (usually in poor condition) and should be recorded at the family level
- Species may be mistaken for other 'light fishes': note head shape, eye size, and point of origin of anal fin (vs. Neoscopelidae and Gonostomatidae)
